In anime, a character's strength isn't always measured by what they can dish out—it can also be measured by how much they can take.
It's one thing to be in awe of a character who can demolish entire buildings with a single blast. But it's just as impressive when a character can withstand such a blast and still remain standing.
Unkillable characters are obviously overpowered, so they often come with serious weaknesses that prevent them from overtaking the world. Maybe they can't dish out damage, or maybe they have diminished brainpower.
From fearsome individuals to ultimate forms of life, here are the toughest anime characters who can take a ton of damage and still not die.
14. Uvogin (Hunter X Hunter)
The Phantom Troupe is composed of insanely strong members, and Uvogin is one of the higher tiers. He's an Enhancer-type Nen user, which gives him the ability to enhance his attacks to a crazy level.
On top of that, he can also enhance his durability, as shown when he sponged all the incoming bullets from the mafia horde and even blocked an entire rocket with his hand.
But in the end, Uvogin was defeated by Kurapika who used an extraordinary Nen Chain that was fueled by hatred.
13. Biscuit Oliva (Baki)
Biscuit "Mr. Unchained" Oliva is a prisoner, but he has more privilege and freedom than most ordinary men. This is because he has an immense strength that even authorities fear, and so he's often put to good use.
Most notably, Oliva's skin is as strong as Kevlar armor, able to tank direct close-quarter shots from a shotgun. He has even ejected pellets out of his body and then healed his wounds—by eating steaks.
12. Yujiro Hanma (Baki)
Yujiro "The Ogre" Hanma is the most feared character in the Baki anime series. Even among the most powerful fighters, no one wants to cross his path or engage him in a fight.
With a body built to be a killing machine, the power to deliver explosive blows, but also the durability to withstand any and all hits from his enemies, Yujiro is essentially unbeatable.
In his fight with Kaiou Kaku, he showed that even the greatest martial arts can't harm him or even make him flinch. Not even a little.
11. Eijiro Kirishima (My Hero Academia)
Eijiro Kirishima (also known by his hero name Red Riot) is a cool character from the My Hero Academia series.
He has a Quirk called Hardening, which allows him to make his body hard enough to withstand attacks and also use his hardened fists for attacks.
He also has a special move called Red Riot Unbreakable, which enhances his hardening even further, surpassing its limits for a finite period of time.
Another character, Tetsutetsu, also has a similar Quirk called Steel, which allows him to turn his body into actual steel.
10. Escanor (Seven Deadly Sins)
Escanor isn't just the strongest of the Seven Deadly Sins, he's also the toughest. We witnessed this in his fight against Estarossa, where it seemed like none of the Demon's attacks could hurt him.
The only time he got scratched was when the Demon used Full Counter, and Escanor mockingly joked that he only felt that one because it was his own attack that hit him.
Another time, in his fight against Galland, Escanor's terrifying durability is put on display. That Demon's attack is magically enhanced to an incredible level, able to obliterate and flatten entire mountains, yet it left only a teeny tiny wound on Escanor's body.
9. Jiren (Dragon Ball Super)
Jiren is the stoic big guy of the Pride Troopers from Universe 11. But behind his no-talk personality, he hides a tremendous power—one that's said to be on par with the Gods of Destruction.
As we see, Jiren is able to endure hits from Goku and Vegeta even when they're in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. Not only that, he's also able to withstand Vegeta's Final Flash head-on and remain unscathed.
The only thing he lacks is trust and connection with his peers, which he learns from the fighters of Universe 7.
8. Colossal Titan (Attack on Titan)
If we're going to include someone from Attack on Titan, you might expect us to pick the Armored Titan. But despite his name, there's one Titan Shifter who's actually even tougher: the Colossal Titan.
During the Colossal Titan's infiltration arc, he goes on an all-out rampage, forcing the Scout Regiment to do everything they can to bring him down—which they failed to do, even with advanced gear like Thunder Spears.
Even when they're able to reach the Colossal Titan's nape, they just can't cut him out because of the Titan Shifter's two defensive abilities: hardened skin and hot steam blasts.
7. Maple (Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt So I'll Max Out My Defense)
Honjo Kaede is a newbie VRMMO gamer girl. Because she's new to the game and afraid of getting hurt, she set her in-game avatar, Maple, to be tough by adding all her points into her defensive VIT stat.
This resulted in her being the most robust character in the entire game, even giving her some elemental immunities. Despite her durability, though, she's pretty slow because of her low AGI stat.
6. Gigantomachia (My Hero Academia)
Gigantomachia, the loyal servant of All for One, is a giant villain who will stop for nothing once he gets started charging forward.
He's the Juggernaut of the My Hero Academia anime series because of his raw strength, immense stamina, and unbreakable defense.
Even Mount Lady (who is herself a giant) with a group of other Pro Heroes can't do enough to bring down Gigantomachia.
5. Diamond Jozu (One Piece)
Just as diamond is the hardest mineral on Earth, so it is in the world of One Piece (along with Seastone). And this is what makes Jozu—the 3rd Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates—the toughest pirate.
He has the ability of the Kira Kira no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to turn himself (or certain parts of his body) into diamond. Because of his high defensive abilities, he's the designated shield of his crew who tanks all incoming attacks.
To prove how strong his diamond body is, he goes ahead and tanks the strongest slash from the Great Black Blade (Yoru) of the strongest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk.
4. Kenpachi Zaraki (Bleach)
Toughness doesn't always mean that one is indestructible or impervious to pain. In fact, you might even say that someone who does take immense damage and remains standing is tougher than most.
Zaraki Kenpachi, the Captain of the 11th Division of Soul Society, is the prime example of someone who tolerates all kinds of attacks that actually cause him damage without knocking him down.
Zaraki can get sliced up, stabbed, and torn apart without succumbing to his injuries. Instead, he actually enjoys the pain and wants more, making him a terrifying opponent to go up against.
3. Kaido (One Piece)
Along with Big Mom and Shanks, Kaido is one of the Emperors of the Sea in One Piece. He possesses a durability like no other, even able to withstand Haki-enhanced attacks.
His greatest feat of survival was jumping from a Sky Island that was 10,000 meters high and surviving the fall. He didn't do it to show off, but actually wanted to kill himself—and failed to do so.
Moreover, his defensive abilities are significantly enhanced when he's in his Azure Dragon form, an ability granted by his mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit, the Uo Uo ni Mi, Model: Seiryu.
2. Meruem (Hunter X Hunter)
A single slap from Chairman Netero's golden avatar would be overkill for anyone else, but Meruem manages to withstand the attack and remain intact. Not only that, but he only suffers minor bruises from it.
That alone displays how indestructible the Ant King is. Meruem has no other significant fight scenes in Hunter X Hunter, but that's okay because his final battle against Netero says it all!
1. Saitama (One Punch Man)
Saitama of One Punch Man is the pinnacle of power in modern anime. He's the one who can defeat villains with just a single punch. But on top of his devastating super-punch, Saitama's body is also indestructible.
All of his powers came from sheer hard work. According to Saitama, he became super-strong and super-tough with nothing more than a daily workout regimen: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10km run.
Now, he can withstand blasts that would otherwise level entire cities and he can walk away without a single scratch. Even in the entire superhero anime genre, few are as tough as the great Saitama.
