At first, we're led to believe that all Devil Fruits are the same—until the term "Paramecia" is mentioned by Wyper in the Skypeia Arc. That opened up all kinds of possibilities for the lore of Devil Fruits in One Piece.
Paramecia is the most common type of Devil Fruit in the series. When consumed, it gives the user one of many skills or properties that fall into a number of subdivisions and classifications.
Such categories include body alteration, substance creation and manipulation, and environmental influence. And then there are Special Paramecia-type Devil Fruits that go beyond those limits.
One Piece has introduced us to tons of characters with numerous different Paramecia-type Devil Fruit abilities. Here are the most powerful Paramecia characters and what they can do.
15. Clown Buggy
Clown Buggy ate the Bara Bara no Mi, the Devil Fruit that allows him to split his body and make him immune to slashing attacks.
While his offensive capabilities are nowhere near the impressiveness of the other characters on this list, the way he utilizes his ability to survive is what makes him earn a spot on this list.
Not only did he survive the Marineford War, but he also took a direct hit from Mihawk and lived to tell the tale!
14. Donquixote Doflamingo
Doflamingo is a manipulative person in the most literal sense—he can actually manipulate other people with his Devil Fruit, Ito Ito no Mi.
Ito Ito no Mi allows him to create thin but strong strings, which he can attach to people and control them like puppets. On top of that, he can also use his strings in other quirky ways: as blades, as bullets, or even as something to step on while traversing midair.
He's also able to "awaken" his Devil Fruit, allowing him to influence the environment and turn things into strings that he can control.
13. Magellan
Magellan is the former warden of Impel Down, who was demoted after Luffy's infiltration and a huge breakout of prisoners.
He has the power of Doku Doku no Mi, giving him the ability to create and manipulate poisons, as well as being immune to his poisons.
He can create highly poisonous and corrosive toxins, which he controls in different forms like Hydra. He can even cover himself with lethal poisons in defense—direct contact instantly corrodes weapons and attackers.
12. Charlotte Katakuri
Charlotte Katakuri, one of the Sweet Commanders of the Big Mom Pirates, has the power of Mochi Mochi no Mi. His Devil Fruit is classified as a "Special Paramecia" as it acts more like a Logia-type Devil Fruit.
He can turn his body into mochi (sticky rice) and acquire its properties, including stickiness and stretchability. He can also generate mochi and manipulate it as a weapon or as an extension of his body.
It looks and works the same way as Luffy's own Gomu Gomu no Mi, especially when used with Armament Haki.
The only difference between his powers and the Logia-type Devil Fruit is that his powers are derived from a man-made element (mochi) and not a naturally occurring substance.
11. Nico Robin
Nico Robin's Hana Hana no Mi allows her to sprout any part of her body on any surface. This makes her a perfect spy suited for gathering intel.
But she's not only good for espionage and reconnaissance—she can also be an assassin and a frontline fighter as well.
For example, she can sprout numerous arms on her opponents' bodies and break their necks instantly, or she can make gigantic hands and arms to deliver a solid and satisfying slap!
10. Charlotte "Big Mom" Linlin
Charlotte "Big Mom" Linlin, an Emperor of the Sea and the Matriarch of the Big Mom Pirates, owns the power of Soru Soru no Mi, which she acquired in a very nightmarish event.
Soru Soru no Mi allows Big Mom to touch, hold, and steal the souls and lifespan of her victims, and use them to give life to nearly all kinds of objects (which are called homies).
Moreover, Zeus, Prometheus, and Napoleon are powerful homies made from fragments of Big Mom's own soul, who can use their respective elements and attributes effectively in battle (like Zeus emitting powerful bolts of lightning).
9. Trafalgar Law
Trafalgar Law of the Heart Pirates is known as the Surgeon of Death because of his Ope Ope no Mi.
This Devil Fruit allows him to create a spherical space, and anyone who's caught within becomes a marked target. Inside his "room," he can do anything he wants—from swapping body parts and identities to removing hearts instantly in a bloodless operation.
He also uses his Devil Fruit powers in other creative ways, like teleporting between points or in conjunction with other people (e.g. Luffy) to make a devastating attack together (as they did against Doflamingo).
8. Shu
Shu is a Marine captain and every swordsman's worst enemy. He has the power of Sabi Sabi no Mi, giving him the ability to force any metal he touches to rust instantly.
Shu destroyed one of Zoro's original swords, the Yubashiri. He probably would've ended up being one of the worst enemies of the samurai and even Eustass Kid, but we never saw him again.
7. Bartolomeo
While most Paramecia abilities are offensive by nature, Bartolomeo's Bari Bari no Mi is famed for its indestructible barriers.
His barriers are so strong that the explosive attacks from Gladius's Pamu Pamu no Mi and Elizabello II's destructive King Punch couldn't even make a single scratch, let alone do anything effective.
However, while Bartolomeo's barrier is impenetrable, there's a limit to how big his barrier can be, as shown when he used himself to protect Robin because his barrier had already reached its maximum size.
6. Diamond Jozu
Diamond Jozu was one of the Commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates before it disbanded. He has the power of Kira Kira no Mi, which allows him to turn himself—or certain body parts—into diamond.
Much like Bartolomeo's Bari Bari no Mi, Jozu's Devil Fruit gives him immense defensive capabilities based on the idea that diamonds are the hardest mineral. With his diamond body, he can even withstand a powerful slash from Dracule Mihawk's Great Blade, Yoru.
5. Bartholomew Kuma
Bartholomew Kuma's Nikyu Nikyu no Mi is the ultimate offense and defense, as it repels anything it touches whether that's a person, a solid object, or even just air. He can send them all flying at incredible speeds (on par with the speed of light, according to Kuma himself).
The ability's trademark is the paw-like pattern on his palms and the paw-like attacks he makes. His Nikyu Nikyu no Mi stayed with him even after he became a cyborg: the Pacifista PX 0. However, other Pacifistas modeled after him don't have the Devil Fruit ability.
4. Shiryu
Shiryu was once the Head Jailer of Impel Down before he decided to join the Blackbeard Pirates. He later received the Suke Suke no Mi ability after they killed Absalom, the original owner of the Devil Fruit.
Suke Suke no Mi allows Shiryu to turn himself invisible, along with anything he touches. He combines his ability with his sword mastery for surprise attacks, making him a silent killer.
3. Fujitora
Issho, also known as Fujitora, is a blind-yet-powerful Marine Admiral. He has the power of Zushi Zushi no Mi, which allows him to control gravity—very powerful when combined with his exceptional swordsmanship.
He can make the gravity heavier in some areas (rendering his opponents immobilized when they're caught inside) and he can also create a reverse gravity field that repels incoming attacks.
It's quite a troublesome ability to go up against, considering he can even call forth a meteor from outer space with it!
2. Monkey D. Luffy
We all know that Luffy unknowingly ate a Devil Fruit out of frustration. This Devil Fruit, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, gave his body the properties of rubber: stretch, expand, inflate, etc.
Through training and experience, he surpassed his Devil Fruit's base attributes, giving him enhanced sets of skills that still fundamentally follow the properties of rubber.
For example, with Gear 2, Luffy gains immense speed through the forceful expansion and contraction of his heart and organs.
Controversially, Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi is originally a different kind of Devil Fruit that was reclassified by the World Government as a Paramecia-type to hide its existence and its true potential.
1. Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate
A former Emperor of the Sea before his death, Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate owns the power of Gura Gura no Mi.
This Devil Fruit gives him the ability to create cracks and distortions in space, to cause quakes across nearly any surface (even air), and to literally break the world apart (if he wanted to).
He's even able to gather and concentrate this power into the blade of his weapon or into his fist, making his attacks truly destructive.
After Whitebeard's death, Blackbeard stole his Devil Fruit powers and became the only known person with two Devil Fruit abilities: the Logia-type Yami Yami no Mi and the Paramecia-type Gura Gura no Mi.
